Cases of Legionnaires’ disease and outbreaks caused by Legionella bacteria have been escalating throughout the United States for the past 20+ years. These bacteria can inhabit drinking water systems in any building and grow. Legionella causes human respiratory disease, not from drinking the water, but when people inhale the tiny droplets of water, called aerosols.

While the disease is relatively rare, it has increased by over 650% in recent years and has become even more prolific since the COVID-19 pandemic. Legionella is a deadly bacterium that causes pneumonia and which can be fatal in 10-25% of people who become infected. The Federal General Services Administration (GSA) has recognized the risk to federal employees even in office buildings.

Requirements to test drinking water for Legionella and other contaminants (lead, copper, and total coliform bacteria) have been recently announced.
