48h

vs. 7–10 days

  • 1

    Fastest culture-based method

Microcolonies detected and counted in 48 hours — not weeks.

  • 2

    Automated AI enumeration

Eliminates confirmatory steps and reduces human error.

  • 3

    High lab throughput

Process up to 18 analyses at once; 500 samples per 8-hour shift.

The Process

How the MICA Advance System Works

The MICA Advance system uses a patented process to make only Legionella pneumophila bacteria fluoresce. After 48 hours, an automated AI-powered scanner counts these fluorescent colonies — delivering rapid, precise results free from false positives.

  1. 1

    Sample collection

Water samples are collected for culture analysis and shipped overnight to the laboratory exactly the same as always. (250 mL samples are recommended)

  2. 2

    Sample concentration

Each water sample is filtered onto a membrane using standard laboratory methods and equipment.

  3. 3

    Selective incubation

The membrane is placed onto selective GVPC agar enriched with Diamidex’s patented pLeg-N₃; growing Legionella pneumophila incorporate this molecule into their cell membrane.

  4. 4Key

    Fluorescent tagging

After 48 hours of incubation, the membrane is exposed to a fluorescent tag that binds specifically to the labeled microcolonies of L. pneumophila.

  5. 5

    Specific to the pathogen

Only microcolonies of L. pneumophila are tagged and counted, avoiding false positive results.

  6. 6Key

    Automated imaging

The MICA counter scans the membrane at high resolution; AI algorithms recognize and count the microcolonies and reports the number of L. pneumophila per mL of sample.

  7. 7

    User-guided workflow

The software provides complete traceability using QR codes and a handheld scanner and guides the operator through each step, ensuring reproducible results.

  8. 8

    Sample Interpretation

Sample analysis results are reported in CFU/mL and can be referenced against regulatory guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

19 answers on Legionella risk, MICA Advance testing, indoor air quality, and HC3 consulting — searchable and organized by topic.

Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by inhaling aerosolized water containing Legionella bacteria — most commonly Legionella pneumophila. It is contracted from building water systems such as cooling towers, hot water systems, decorative fountains, and showerheads — not from person-to-person contact.
CDC data shows rising hospitalizations and deaths from Legionnaires' disease between 2015 and 2020. Contributing factors include aging plumbing infrastructure, climate-related water temperature changes, reduced water use in vacant buildings, and increased awareness and reporting. Healthcare and long-term care facilities remain high-risk settings.
Legionella thrives in warm, stagnant water with biofilm — typically in hot water loops, cooling towers, evaporative condensers, dead legs in plumbing, showerheads, ice machines, and decorative fountains. Temperatures between 77°F and 108°F (25–42°C) and low disinfectant residuals create ideal conditions for amplification.
A water management program (WMP) is a documented plan to identify, monitor, and control Legionella risk in building water systems. ASHRAE Standard 188 and CDC guidance recommend WMPs for healthcare facilities, hotels, and other buildings with complex water systems. HC3 helps develop, audit, and implement defensible WMPs grounded in exposure science.
Testing frequency depends on building type, water system complexity, prior results, and regulatory requirements. Healthcare facilities often test quarterly or after remediation. HC3 develops sampling strategies tailored to your system — including pre- and post-remediation validation — rather than applying a one-size-fits-all schedule.
Culture methods (ISO 11731) grow live bacteria and remain the regulatory gold standard but take 7–10 days. PCR detects DNA rapidly but cannot distinguish live from dead organisms and may not quantify infectious risk. MICA Advance offers a culture-based alternative with 48-hour results, preserving the scientific rigor of culture with dramatically faster turnaround.
MICA Advance is a rapid culture-based Legionella detection system that combines patented chemistry, automated high-resolution imaging, and AI-driven colony counting. It is exclusively distributed in the United States by HC3 and is designed for facilities that need defensible, fast Legionella pneumophila results.
MICA Advance delivers culture-based Legionella pneumophila results in 48 hours — compared to 7–10 days for standard ISO 11731 methods. Faster results enable quicker remediation decisions, reduced exposure windows, and more responsive water management in healthcare, hospitality, and industrial facilities.
Validation studies report 96% sensitivity and 99.7% specificity for Legionella pneumophila detection with MICA Advance — performance equivalent or superior to ISO 11731 culture methods, with significantly faster turnaround.
ISO 11731 requires 7–10 days and significant technician handling time (45–55 minutes per sample). MICA Advance uses a patented process to make only L. pneumophila fluoresce, then an AI-powered scanner counts microcolonies in 48 hours with ~4 minutes of technician time per sample — reducing false positives from non-target organisms.
