“The scary thing is, we’re running out of water here in Florida. It’s a real concern, and the push to find solutions may lead to unintended consequences that we aren’t prepared for,” McNeely observes. On a personal note, the podcast also gives listeners a glimpse into McNeely’s family life.

With over 20 years of experience, McNeely enjoys the constant change and challenges that the job brings. “The job is never the same, and that’s what makes it exciting. There’s always something new to figure out, and it’s like solving a puzzle every day,” he remarks.

McNeely emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and innovation in industrial hygiene. He wants to be remembered as someone who embraced scientific progress and who was always willing to challenge the status quo in pursuit of better solutions. One of the critical points McNeely makes during the episode is the lack of public awareness about water safety.

Most people take the quality of their drinking water for granted, assuming that the water from their taps is safe. However, McNeely cautions that the general public is often ignorant about the risks posed by waterborne pathogens. He even shares that he is extremely cautious about exposing his children to water from public sources, including bottled water, as he notes that many water contaminants are not always tested for.

“Just because it’s bottled doesn’t mean it’s safe. There’s a lot we don’t know about the water we consume,” McNeely warns. As the conversation wraps up, McNeely emphasizes the need for continuous improvement and a shift toward more comprehensive testing and preventive measures.

He believes that a more detailed and science-based approach is necessary to fully understand and combat waterborne pathogens. McNeely also stresses the importance of education. He explains that many people haven’t even heard of Legionella, let alone Pseudomonas or other lesser-known pathogens.

Expanding public and industry knowledge is critical to improving water safety. “Legionella is just one piece of the puzzle. We need to be testing for all water pathogens to really ensure safety,” McNeely concludes.
