David Krause to discuss a pressing seasonal issue: the Legionella risks and other pathogen risks in water systems during the warmer months. "I'm well today, but not as good as the pathogens are doing in our water," said Dr.

Krause emphasized the importance of comprehensive water testing. “Unless you know through a substantial and rigorous testing program, you are operating in the blind.” Organizations often depend on assumptions or surface-level indicators such as chlorine levels or water temperature, yet pathogens don't always follow these guidelines. The only reliable method is routine sampling and analysis.
Testing can’t be a one-time effort. Even new or recently replaced systems can become colonized in a matter of weeks. Dr.
Krause cited research showing Legionella colonization in brand-new systems within six weeks and hot tubs becoming fully colonized in just fourteen days. "A one-time test at best tells you what you are right now." Despite the stakes, many organizations fail to implement proper water management plans. According to Dr.
Krause, the failure is largely due to outdated beliefs about water quality in the U.S. and a lack of public awareness. Therefore legionella risks continue to develop and threaten the safety of our water systems. "The story we've been sold for years is that the water quality we have in this country is top rate.
That may have been the case in the past. It is not today." Compounding the issue is the gutting of public health infrastructure. People are letting go of epidemiologists, the very people trained to spot outbreaks early.
Without their vigilance, small outbreaks go undetected until they become large, public tragedies. High Legionella risk environments include hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hotels, resorts, and cruise ships. Water systems in these locations often include hot tubs, decorative fountains, or complex plumbing — all of which provide prime habitat for Legionella.
Dr. Krause shared that even garden hoses and pressure washers can harbor the bacteria. The danger isn't limited to public settings — home environments can pose a risk as well.
"It’s in our showers. It’s in our water heaters. It’s in our hot tubs and spas." Legionella becomes dangerous when aerosolized — breathed into the lungs through mist from showers, fountains, or even gardening.
Once inhaled, it can cause Legionnaires' disease, a serious type of pneumonia with a high hospitalization and fatality rate. "Legionella has a very high hospitalization rate and fatality rates approach 10% for general members of the community." Dr. Krause added that it’s not just elderly or immunocompromised individuals who are at risk.
Increasing cases among younger, seemingly healthy adults are being recorded. Ships are particularly vulnerable due to their closed-loop water systems and bunkered water supplies. Even freighters and private yachts have experienced outbreaks.
Dr. Krause raised concerns about current practices for managing water on cruise ships, which often follow outdated or generalized guidance that may not be evidence-based. “Many of those efforts were only partially effective or completely ineffective.” As for airplanes, the conversation acknowledged but did not delve deeply into similar risks related to airborne water particles.
Organizations that delay action until after an outbreak not only endanger lives, they also face serious financial and reputational harm. Dr. Krause explained that lawsuits resulting from Legionnaires' disease can result in millions of dollars in damages and even drive companies into bankruptcy.
“I’ve seen hotels, large hotels, go bankrupt. And they looked back and said, it is because of that outbreak.” A major theme in the discussion was the danger of hiring under qualified consultants. Dr.
Krause described many cases where initial consultants gave poor advice or false reassurances. “Fake it till you make it? I’ve seen that way too many times.” To combat this, the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) is working to define core competencies for waterborne pathogen professionals through initiatives like the Principles of Good Practice (PGP).
These documents aim to set minimum standards for knowledge, skills, and ethical conduct. The first PGP is expected by May 2025, with further updates to AIHA’s technical framework and microbial testing field guides to follow. Legionella isn’t just in water.
The podcast revealed that certain species, like Legionella longbeachiae, also live in soil and compost. People using bagged soil or mulch in their gardens can unknowingly aerosolize the bacteria and inhale them. “It’s a risk rarely considered by public health officials.” "Know your risk.
